Lies van Roessel is a Research Associate in the Department of Music, Media and Speech Studies at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. Her doctoral thesis is about the design processes and developer norms of free-to-play games.

Lies studied New Media and Digital Culture with a specialization in Game Studies at Utrecht University and took courses at the IT University of Copenhagen. From 2008 to 2014 Lies researched serious games and their development processes at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. From 2014 to 2016 she conducted a study into imitation and innovation in the German games sector at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) in Berlin. At Leibniz Institute for Media Research/Hans Bredow Institute in Hamburg (2016–2018), Lies’ research topics included algorithmic decision making, tools for digital journalism and privacy by design. In 2018 she led the project 'Medienerziehung im Dialog' ('Media education in dialogue') at the Digital Opportunities Foundation in Berlin, which explored media literacy in early childhood education.
